Are You Ready to Place Your Child in Day Care?

Unfortunately, with the rising prices of...well, just about everything these days, it is very often necessary that after a new mother gives birth to a baby boy or girl, she will need to return to work. For many, this means finding a suitable day care center, or an appropriate type of care for their toddler.
There are several types of child care options for new parents, so making an informed decision on which to choose can be made a bit easier with some knowledge and research. Knowing what types of day care options are available can often help determine which type will be a wise choice not only for the parent, but for the child as well.
  • In-Home Child Care; In this situation, a child care provider will come to your home to take care of your child for the hours that are required. Some great advantages of this are that the child is in an environment that is familiar to him or her. This type of day care can be of an advantage to an unsure parent as well, as some of the worry about where little Johnny is and what he is doing can be alleviated somewhat.
  • Family Child Care: This is another popular option with parents many times. In this type of situation, the child will be cared for at the home of the provider. As opposed to one-on-one care, there will often be other children present, and if necessary more adults, depending on the ratio needed for the lived in state. One great advantage to this type of care is that the child will be in an environment with other children, which can greatly help in the creation of solid social skills which will be necessary as he or she becomes older and goes to school with other kids.
  • Child Care Centers: This is one of the most common type of day care. In a child care center, there will often be more adults as there will be more children requiring attention throughout the day. The same basic idea of socialization applies in this type of setting, but it can sometimes be a bit limited. Some child care centers have a corporate set of rules and regulations, which can mean that playtime and activities can be standardized, and not much open to change.
Which type of child day care is right for you and your child? All of that really depends on the schedule and needs of both the parent and the child. What is easy, and convenient for one parent may be an inconvenience for another, so there are not any hard and fast rules about which choice is the "right one".
In the end, it is up to you, the parent to determine what will be the best option for your child and for yourself for your child care needs. With some basic information and research, the decision on which kind of care your child will benefit from the most should be quite a bit easier.
Walter Brown invites you to check out my informational website, oddly called Day Care Reno, which is an informational site meant to inform new parents about which type of institution will be a proper fit for their child.

Benzodiazepines: Quitting and Living to Tell the Story

Looking back, I guess I've had some form of anxiety for most of my adult life. I also realize in hindsight that I was having minor panic episodes as early as twelve years old. When I was about 18 years old I finally went to a physician to try to gain some control over the agitation and anxiety I was having. This would be the beginning of what would be about 18 years of benzodiazepine dependence.

Over the course of this 18 year addiction, I tried for various periods of time, most every benzodiazepine available on the market by prescription. I found some of them to make me feel dizzy and not quite with it mentally, which is what I felt during episodes of extreme panic, so these medications did not sit well with me. I ultimately took Alprazolam for a large portion of the time I was dependent, and at the end switched to Diazepam for what would be my withdrawal.
I do not like to use the word addiction when talking about a benzodiazepine dependence, because that word does not really represent what it is like to be completely dependent on a pill. I never got any pleasure from taking any of these medications, and I never had any part of my personality or brain that wanted these drugs for any reason other than to keep from feeling sick, and shaky.
What I did have, was a body that became very sick the longer I took these horrible medications. As I took more, my anxiety and tolerance grew, which meant that I had to take more, which started the cycle all over again, and it repeated like that for years.

Nobody ever warned me that if I really wanted to stop taking these drugs, that I would have to fight harder than I would ever imagine, because the physical dependence is so horrible that I would do almost anything to feel normal again. I even worked in the medical field, and I worked around people who knew this information...and none of them bothered to tell me anything.
One day about three years ago, I finally decided that a life where always needing a pill on my person was not something that I was interested in anymore. I began my long search for the side-effects of a self-induced withdrawal, how to safely do it and what to expect.

Needless to say, even after reading all of the horror stories I was still not really ready, but I forged ahead anyway. I found a wonderful website full of people who had gone through a benzodiazepine withdrawal, lived to tell their story and wanted to help others. They did not want any money or recognition, they just wanted to spare innocent people from some of the horrific symptoms they went through.

I found a fairly customized withdrawal schedule, and I started my long process of withdrawal. It took me over two years to get off of a 40 Milligram per day prescription, and it was just awful. Some people say that a withdrawal like mine can be done in few weeks to a maximum of a few months. I wouldn't wish such a short schedule on any person that I know, enemy or friend.
The pure anxiety and burning skin and feelings of pure doom that you feel on a benzodiazepine withdrawal are something that can not be described. Going through it is absolutely the only way to really understand how terrible it is.

Some days or weeks were really easy as I progressed my daily dose down by fractions, and some weeks were so bad that I had to maintain a dose for periods of a few weeks until I felt better. When I felt better, I would continue my withdrawal and hope for the best.
In the end, my final dose was one-tenth of a Milligram which is a total cut of 39.9mg total daily dose. The difference between 0.1mg and 0.0mg was not much fun at all. In fact, I ended up having to take small amounts every few days just to stay halfway normal, and this continued for a few months.

This drug just would not let me go from its grasp, no matter how hard I tried. The physical addiction to these medications that are legally prescribed around the world daily is something that is impossible to describe.

Feelings of not being a part of your own body, and the feeling that you are going to lose your mind just getting through a stop light are constant. Shaking, sweating and the feeling that you never think you are going to live through the ordeal are a daily occurrence.

The feeling that there are possibly millions of people out there that will have to go through this, or stay on the drug their entire life makes a person feel truly horrible. The only positive thing that someone going through a withdrawal can look forward to, is the fact that it has to be over, eventually.

Benzodiazepines are, in my opinion, completely unsafe drugs that have no business being sold for human consumption. Yes there are warnings on the label, but do doctors really tell their patients how truly dangerous a simple prescription can be? In my case, the answer to that is no.
In the end, I lived through one of the hardest times I will ever have in my life, and I am able to tell the story. I am not ashamed of my so-called addiction, because I would have burned my prescription eighteen years ago, if I was armed with the knowledge that I have now.

If you know somebody taking a benzodiazepine, it is important to understand that they may have to get off of their medication one day. It is even more important to know that this will be very unpleasant for them in all likelihood.

I feel like I have years of my life that have been wasted, and I will never get those years back. I did not sign up to be an addict, or a drug abuser or whatever label people want to put on it. I had bad anxiety, and I wanted it to stop, so I turned to a doctor. I was not warned by my doctor or pharmacist of the dangers I was about to face, and I had no idea that I would spend years under the influence of a drug so powerful that I could barely stop taking it even when I finally had all of my information.

At the end of the day, I lived through it and I can look back on my long withdrawal as something that I do not, and will not ever go through again, so a bit of anxiety is like a vacation in comparison.

Tips for A More Pleasant Air Travel Experience

Flying can sometimes be a bit of a hassle, and there is really not very much a person can do about that for the most part. There are some very simple things that you and I, as travelers, can do to make the experience a whole lot smoother than it sometimes is.

When we travel by airplane, whether it is for our job, or for pleasure there is a pretty good chance that some kind of annoyance will pop up. It may be on the actual airplane, or it may be in the airport, with the latter being a bit more likely in the experience of many.

In a previous job, I flew approximately 150,000 miles in a period of a year, so I can say that I have seen a few things in our countries airports and airplanes. What I have found is that even though a lot of the rules and regulations can be a real nightmare, we have no choice but to follow them, or take a car to our destination.

I have been talked to like I am a three year old, I have spent the night in airports due to missed connections, and I have smelled the dirtiest passengers you could ever be stuck with at 35,000 feet, and I have learned a few things in the process. Regardless of your belief system, or your privacy issues, there are things that we, as passengers do not have control over. Knowing what these are, accepting them, and going on about our day is the only way to survive through airline travel.

By following a few really simple rules, and understanding a few simple concepts, airline travel can be a little bit easier for you, me, the flight crew and the airport staff.
  • Pack properly. If you plan to bring liquids with you on the airplane, pack them according to the FAA guidelines. For a carry-on bag, this would be about a 3oz container with acceptable liquid. Liquids should be placed in a plastic bag, and taken out of the carry-on to be placed in the bin for scanning

  • Leave matches, lighters, fingernail clippers, nail files or any other object that has even a slightly sharp tip at home, or pack it in your checked baggage. Failure to do this will be confiscation, and a possible pat-down if you are really lucky

  • Turn your cell phone off when asked. We don't really know for sure if a cell phone signal will take an airplane out of the sky, but nonetheless, the crew wants us to turn our cell phones off for a reason, and being sneaky will not get most people very far in trying to avoid this rule. Regardless of the safety issue for this, think about how noisy a flight could be if people were allowed to talk on their cell phone as much as they wanted.

  • Stow away your laptops, carry-on luggage and any other loose items during take off and landing. It may seem like keeping these items out should be your choice, but think of it this way. At 500mph, a laptop becomes a deadly object that I would rather not have hit me in the back of the head.
Overall, be courteous to your fellow passengers and flight crew. Everybody on the airplane is trying to get somewhere just like you, and if everybody follows the rules, we can all have a much more pleasant experience on our next trip across the country. Remember that there may be two hundred other people flying with you, and they may not be enjoying themselves very much either.
My name is Wally Brown, and I have traveled for my job, and for pleasure. I have stood in security lines for hours on end, and I have spent hours on a hot tarmac waiting to fly, only to be turned around due to weather. There are so many things that can make a travel experience a frustrating event, but if some basic travel tips were employed by more travelers, the entire experience could be much better for everyone involved.

Can Article Writing Actually Be Fun?

To many people, writing is not really on the list of things they would consider fun in a normal situation. For people who are in the business of internet marketing, or maybe doing a book report for college, it can be even more tedious.

Is it possible to just write your thoughts down and actually enjoy the writing experience? I believe it is entirely possible, if you, as the writer follows a few really simple thoughts.

Most people realize that if you need to explain something to someone, whether it is through written-word or through speech, that clarity of thought is generally achieved when the topic is enjoyable. Sometimes we have to write out of necessity for financial or academic gain, and this can often be really hard. Many times, the writing process becomes a bit easier very simply after you have started, but you have spent so much time getting to the starting point that you are already frustrated while writing the first sentence.

A few things that you can do to make your writing a bit more fun, and a lot less of a chore is to simply be yourself. If you have to write a lot of technical jargon, about a subject that you may not know a whole lot about, this can be very difficult indeed.

But if you just pay attention to the end result, and what you ultimately want that to be, it does not have to be so horrible. The chance that you will at some point, have to write about a subject that is confusing, or foreign to you is fairly good. I mean, if we could all be published writers, who write about the simple things we enjoy in life, without any regard to spelling or grammar, then the whole process would be easy as pie, wouldn't it?

The truth is, some people just do not like writing, but that is OK. What I have found in the writing process is that if you can learn to do a few easy things, your writing can be a bit less of a chore, and more of a satisfactory experience. A few of these ideas are as follows:
  • Know thy subject. There is nothing harder than writing about a subject that you are learning as you type it out. If you consider yourself to be terrible at mathematics, then writing an article or paper on advanced physics will very likely not be easy for you. If you have any choice in the matter, stick to topics that you can write about with a fair amount of comfort.

  • Do your research. There will come a time in the life of a writer in which he/she may have to write about a foreign subject. That is not necessarily a problem, but you do need to do some research. Becoming familiar with your subject, so that it can be presented in a clear, concise manner will help the reader understand, which should always be your ultimate goal.

  • Try to employ basic grammar and spelling to the best of your ability. If you have a spell-check program, use it. When I read an article and I see misspelled words, the credibility gets a bit lost in translation. When I am reading a how-to piece, I want to know that the person that wrote the information has a at least a basic grasp on his or her vocabulary and spelling skills.
If you are the kind of person that just does not enjoy writing, that may not ever fully change. However, if you need to write on a regular basis, it is possible to not have it hurt so bad. I have always found that getting the first sentence out is the biggest task, and once that is accomplished, things seem to get much easier.

No matter what your level of writing though, if you are at least somewhat passionate about your subject, and aware of the needs of your audience, then you should be able to write great articles about just about any subject, in not very much time.

If you come across as genuine to your reader, then all of your hard work will be appreciated. This will make the writing process less of a task, and more of a hobby that can be really fun with just a little bit of practice.

Writing can be very difficult for many people, but sticking with it and pressing on when you are frustrated can make the difference in a great article...or one that has not been written! Think about it.

Can You Have Fun at the Casino, and Possibly Win While You Are There?

It seems like gambling is everywhere these days doesn't it? There are movies about M.I.T. students breaking the Vegas casinos, and you can't watch late night television without finding some sort of professional poker game on.

Many of the movies and television shows about gambling may lead you to believe that gambling is not really gambling at all, but instead a ticket to free money. I can not agree with this theory, but I can say that as a bit of a gambler, you can have a lot of fun at the casino, and if you play your cards right (pun intended), you just may walk out of the casino with more than you came in with.
As someone who has grown up around slot machines in grocery stores, casinos and some basic form of gambling at just about any type of building or business you can think of, it is safe to say that I have done a fair share of gambling in my day.

I have found some very simple tips that have made my gambling experiences a lot more fun than they used to be. Do I win 100% of the time? No. Not even the best cheat wins all of the time, and a basic gambler not using any kind of cheating system can do it either. So what can you do?

First, you can set an absolute to your bankroll that you can afford to lose. Since winning is never a guarantee, this is the most important thing that you can ever do. The reason that setting a reasonable limit for yourself is so important is very simple, but a lot of people seem to forget it.
Do not drink excessively when gambling. This is for a few reasons, but the main one is for the reason above. If intoxicated, and losing money you are much more likely to bet piles of money that you do not have, hoping to 'make it all back". If you have a budget of $100 for a night, and you lose that $100 and you go to the ATM for another $100 to bet all at once to get your lost money back, you may end up regretting that strategy.

People generally do not win money very often with this type of betting, and it is stressful to do. This is all the more reason to be of sound mind at the casino. If you are thinking clearly, you are less apt to make bets that may lose you a lot of your money.

Leave your ATM card at home. Go to the bank, get some cash out that you can afford to lose, and go have some fun. Most people have the urge to get the ATM card out and head to the cage to get more money to keep playing. Most of those same people will not feel the same once they get all of the way home just to get the debit card.

Be careful of "winning systems". If I knew how to use a foolproof system at a casino, I would not write a book or website about my technique, I would be at the casino winning money. There are systems that are perfectly legal, very practical and really easy to implement that do not involve any betting system that can deplete your bankroll much faster than just betting a set amount of money.

For instance: If you game is Blackjack, memorize basic strategy and stick to it no matter what. Trying to count cards in a sophisticated way without months and months of constant practice will only serve to confuse most people. The only people that certainly will not be confused will be the pit bosses, and you only want their attention if they are giving you a complimentary meal or stay.

Also, watch out when betting a lot of what some people will call "sucker bets". Any bet can win, at any game, but some just have terrible odds of doing so. The temptation to play these bets is high though, because the payout can be fairly large. Some one-time bets in the game of Craps pay as much as 30:1, but these are one-time bets, and the odds of losing that bet over and over are outstanding. So while these bets may pay 30:1, there is a 35:1 chance that you will lose.
These bets can be thrilling for many players, so I would not say that you should not play them, but it is nice to be aware of the risk involved.

If you follow some basic rules that you set up yourself and stick to them, you can have a really good time at the local casino, and it is completely possible to win. Winning money is a great feeling, but simply not losing can sometimes be just as good.

Do not lose your winnings. This is a common folly that can be avoided easily. If you are playing a game where you win chips, put any profit in your pocket and just accept that it has to stay there. If you are playing an electronic game, look at your investment on the screen, and once you get to, or start to dip below your comfort zone try another machine or leave for the night.

If you can play your favorite game for five hours on $20 and go home, that is a whole lot more fun than winning $100 in five minutes, only to lose it all...plus another $500 over the next hour.
So, can going to the casino be fun and profitable? Of course it can. You will need some skill, some luck and most of all some perseverance to keep your winnings in your pocket. To recap, if you follow some simple rules, no matter what, you may just end up a winner.
  • Set your bankroll, and do not spend a penny more
  • Drink water or soda while gambling to avoid clouded judgement
  • Leave your ATM card at home
  • Pocket your winnings
Most of all, enjoy your experience and if you do not win, come back another day and try again, when you can of course.

I have lived in Northern Nevada for most of my life, and I enjoy a night out playing some Blackjack, Keno or Craps. For all of the so-called winning systems I tried over the years, I found the best one to be simple logic. Gambling can be a lot of fun, or it can be a huge letdown, but by following some simple rules, it really can be enjoyable and often times it can be profitable as well.
